Greek history is replete with Alcmaeonidae's influence in civic and military affairs, pretty much from the time of recorded history until the end of the last Peloponnesian War in 404 BC. I have reason to believe the clan's roots in the region, however, can be traced further back in time to Ancient Persia of Zoroaster and before.
Pericles may not have been the founder of Athenian democracy, his mother's uncle Cleisthenes takes credit for that, but he certainly was the first to implement the system of government on a widespread basis throughout Athens. As a result, the nation/state flourished, both economically and as a culture, for many centuries thereafter. Historians generally regard him as the father of the Golden Age of Athens.
Athen's newfound wealth gave Pericles the latitude to commence ambitious building projects, the most historically auspicious of which was The Parthenon. Most of the major temples of the Acropolis were constructed under his supervision, as well.
His father Xanthippus (530 - 475 BC) led the combined Greek forces to a decisive victory over the Persians at the Battle of Mycale in 479 BC. The victory brought an end to the Persian invasion campaigns of Greece as well as turned the tide of the Greco-Persian War in favor of the Greeks.
Pericles' Alcmaeonidae lineage traces back to Argonaut Nestor and the builders of Delphi of ancient Greek history. At least from the perspective of the mythical traditions (as well as actual genealogical evidence), this is an entirely separate genus of the human species, whose primary direct descent remains well apart from either the nobility of Judeo-Trojan lineages until much later after the Trojan War. Macedonian Alexander the Great and his direct descendant Antiochus III Seleucid were both direct descendants of the Argonaut forebears. Byzas (fl. 660 BC), the founder and eponym of Byzantium, was one of their forebears whose descendants mated with descendants of Trojan nobility.
The separate genus of Trojan and Argonaut lineages created the mortal clash between their respective hubris that ultimately led to the Trojan War and the destruction of Troy. Moreover, the very thought of the prospect of Greek goddess Helen mating with Trojan Paris must have been abhorrent enough to stir the entire Greek populace to demand her immediate repatriation and destruction of Troy thereafter. Of course, Menelaus couldn't have agreed more.
Descendants of Trojan-Greek nobility later returned to Byzantium during the 1st Crusade. A contingent of Crusader knights traveled to Constantinople to enlist the support of Emperor Alexius Komnenus. His daughter was so smitten by the presence of one of them upon their arrival, she wrote a detailed description of her first encounter with Bohemond I of Antioch. Her great-great-grand niece later married his great-great-nephew (see relationship below).
