W.I.P. Blog Hop

Welp, with Nanowrimo going on, I can’t take a super long time for blog posts (busy busy am I!) but I figured I could do this one about my W.ork I.n P.rogress since it would tell everyone a little about what I’m working on for Nano.  Thanks to my buddy for tagging me!

There are ten questions to answer about your W.I.P.  I might tag a couple of people after, but if you want to answer them, please do so and be sure to leave me a link so I can check our your answers!

Here goes:

1)What is the working title of your book?

The Girl Who Glided Under the Sea

2)Where did the idea come from for the book?

Oddly enough, Patty and I came up with underwater merfolk type stories around the same time (twins!).  I always thought it was weird that there were only mermaids/men and why couldn’t there be other half sea animal half human hybrids. So while the two main characters are your typical merfolks, there are also crab-folk, octo-people, seahorse-men and shark-men.  Why should fish have all the fun? :D

3)What genre does your book fall under?

Fantasy. This one is also Middle Grade rather than YA

4)Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Oooh who knows. Maybe I’d want to cast all fresh faces, especially since the ages of the kids are 12-17.

5)What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Gah only one sentence? I hate those…

Surfer girl Penelope wipes out and gets saved by Phineas, prince of the merfolk, who changes her into a mermaid with a magical necklace that later gets stolen by the evil shark-folk who want to use it to turn human and gain power and wealth.

6)Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Good question. I am currently self published but might be looking to consider a small press to help with promotions.

7)How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Just started it! Four days and 10k words in. (At the time this posts, it’ll be 6 days in and who knows how many words)

8)What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Hmm well, I guess I have to compare it a bit to the Little Mermaid (we can use the Disney version since the original has a far unhappier ending) because the necklaces are rumored to have been made by a prior king who’s daughter married a human prince and he wanted them to still be able to easily visit with each other.

Also I guess Everblue…even though that’s a YA book.

9)Who or What inspired you to write this book?

Deja vu….

10)What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Welp, there’s a good bit of comedy and it’s a good adventure story with a tad of romance (nothing too crazy, this is MG!). Also, seahorse-boy who’s very sensitive about impending fatherhood. Too cute! :D

So share people! What are you working on? Something for Nanowrimo? Something different? Share, share!
