On NaNoWriMo & the Bunker

It’s still very strange to me when people ask for my advice on writing, but one thing I always try to stress is that everyone has a different way of working, and that given all the noise out there, you have to respect your own process. Find what works for you and do it.

During NaNoWriMo and through the next few months, I’m going to be a bit quieter. I’ll still be checking in on Twitter and Tumblr, sharing news and answering questions, but my primary focus will be Ruin and Rising, the third and final book in the Grisha Trilogy.

For me, this means going into the bunker. A lot of people work best in critique groups. I don’t. A lot of people like to share their daily wordcounts or favorite lines from their WIPs. I don’t. My heart is always full of doubt and I work best when I can pretend that no one is watching, that the story and the characters belong only to me.

That said, I know a lot of you will have your noses to the grindstone right alongside me throughout November and I want you to know that I am (quietly) cheering you on.

Be brave.

Be diligent.

Stay caffeinated.

Power to the people.
