Interview with T. Lynne Tolles

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I 've read a lot in the Young Adult genre and guess I feel comfortable in it. I don't need a story to have sex to be entertaining and I if I'm reading in another genre I sometimes skip the sex parts just because I find them predictable, hence I write what I enjoy.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Yes and it's funny because initially Marlin Howard was not going to play as big a role as he does, but the more I played with the character, the more I liked him and used him when I could.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
My favorite scene is wen Marlin and his wife, Meme, have a comical dialog in the car on the way home from picking up Ella's cat Boo from Grey Manor.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
Initially it wasn't for a book, but a vacation - we went to Scotland on a family vacation. I used the things I saw and the feelings I got from the being there, in my book Somber Island. I think without having been there, the story might not have come across as dark and gothic as it did.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
I would say that the lead female characters in all my books tend to be a bit like me, but that wasn't really my intention. Darby in the Blood Series is organized, funny and strong when she needs to be, feminine and soft at other times.  In Mirror of Shadows and Somber Island the lead females have had some hard breaks, but that doesn't leave them poisoned to the goodness in people and the beauty found around them. Both women are rather naive and sheltered, and I supposed that too comes from me and my way of dealing with life.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Oh Yes. In fact I had a terrible bout of it when I was writing the last book in the Blood Series. It was actually a couple of fan letters asking how everything ended that actually pushed me over the hump and finishing the book and series.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Beer, Cherry Garcia and Baked Macs and Cheese....Yum!
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
When it's pouring rain outside and I'm cuddled in bed with a kitty or two around me. Of course this is how I prefer to write too.
What can readers expect next from you?
I don't expect I'll be writing much until the holidays have come and gone, but I do have three works in progress. One story is about a young woman who finds a hellhound pup and decides to raise it on her own. It will have some humorous "Big Dog"  incidents that I'm drawing from my own experience living with a Newfoundland. The woman and the hound will find trouble and mystery at every corner.
Another work in progress I'm tentatively calling Dead Sleep is a story of two lovers that are separated by misfortune. One makes the ultimate sacrifice for the other in order to pick up where they left off in the future, only to find when the future arrives his love, though alive, no longer knows him or their past life together.
Lastly is a silly illustrated book of a cat who thinks he is a super hero called Captain Fuzzypants - illustrations done by me.
