The Host by
Stephenie MeyerMy rating:
5 of 5 starsIt was a long book but got me hooked by the internal dialogue between the alien soul and the human host. Watching their mutual distrust and fear/loathing grow into grudging acceptance and finally love was amazing.
Wanda, the soul, was very likeable, although a bit too self-sacrificing and perfect. Mary Sue. But I loved Melanie, the human host, and how she rubbed off on Wanda, making her more human-like.
The story dragged a bit in the middle where Wanda/Melanie experienced all sorts of discrimination and slights, while she tries to be the model citizen. I kept thinking that the Seeker would find them and bring an all out war and that kept me on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately, as soon as I thought some violent action would happen, the situation is resolved too easily.
This happened over and over again. I would think of all the lurid directions the plot would go, more danger, suspense, action, and somehow Wanda would get through with a bluff. So at the end, this story is about relationships because the changes were internal among the thoughts, opinions, and emotions of the characters.
The ending was somewhat predictable but sweet.
