The Inevitability Of Evil

Megan Cashman, author of The Dark Proposal, has written an interesting blog about the evolution of vampires that touches on many of the themes I've been obsessing about lately.

Megan is differentiating between younger vampires still coming to terms with their nature, and older vampires who have had centuries, even millennia, to come to terms with their nature - and to have had any and all lingering remnants of humanity stripped away.

The questions are:
- can a younger vampire retain their humanity?
- can an older vampire recover their humanity?

Both interesting, but my question is: How does a vampire retain some humanity for centuries, if not millennia? And that is the question that both my novels address.

Rita Hello, Megan. I'm only a reader.Francis, I really don't know how, a vampire can keep, or find, humanity. The young, might be able to, for a while, because, they still remember, how it was, to be human. The older, vampire, would only remember,if they had stayed,& lived, around humans, since they became a vampire.Take them out of the human world, would be imposable, don't you think? But, there in,lies a problem,of the blood, & where to get it,unless, they fed on animals? Could they, keep any humanity, then,I'm asking? Thats how they fed in, Twlight.

Francis Franklin You're right, I feel, that the key is to stay in the human world. That's the difficulty I have with urban fantasies where whole 'other' societies are created and the ordinary human experience is considered a lesser reality.

Animal blood, hospital blood and substitutes are tricks that allow the vampire to avoid the essential dilemma of feeding on humans. My problem with this (I've complained about this before and no doubt will again) is that it just creates a story about superhumans with a strange dietary requirement.

Crucial, however, is the ability to be able to feed off humans without needing to kill them. In Suzie's case, she doesn't feel guilty about taking blood from strangers, or killing people she believes deserve to die, but to kill someone otherwise, or to drink the blood of someone she cares about, is distressing. She's definitely haunted by her memories.

Rita I forgot, about, a vampire feeding on but not, killing, a human. Sometimes, they do that on, The Vampire Diaries. It's kind of like, when Bella was bitten, by James, before they killed him, & Edward, having to suck the venom out.It was even hard for him, to, not, take too much. A vampire, with guilt!!! Interesting. Let me know when you figure it all out. Is Megan a new author, on goodreads? How would I contact her again, please. It really is a lot of fun, being able to talk to author's, & see how you come up with these, wonderful stories.

Francis Franklin Here is Megan's novel, The Dark Proposal. Her profile has a link to her blog.
The Dark Proposal by Megan Cashman

My novel about Suzie is: Suzie and the Monsters A Fairytale of Blood Sex and Inhumanity.

I always find the idea of venom a little strange. It takes all the fun out of being a vampire. (I read the beginning and watched the end of Twilight the other day.)
