It’s All About The Little Things

Note from me: I will be away all week speaking at The Hawaii Social Media Summit. My friend Dan Black has graciously agreed to moderate my comments.

When my wife and I first started talking to each other, I was head over heels in love. I wanted to completely impress her so I went over the top with everything I did.

When she was at work I would sneak up to her job and get her car to fill up her gas tank. Once a week I would buy flowers and surprise her. I would open doors, I would pay attention to every word she said, I would do her laundry. I did all of the little things but they made all the difference.

You know what? The small things won her over and are the reason why we’re still married 14 years later.

The little things separate you from everybody else

So how do you stand out from all your co-workers at work? What separates your business from every other business that does the same thing as yours ? What’s going to make your blog stand out from the over 200 million other blogs online?

There are people out there killing it right now with some of the things they’re doing, you might be one of those people. Want to separate yourself? You’re going to have to go over the top.

Is there a bonus you could give your customers? If you’re a blogger, is there an information product you can give your readers? To stand out you could give your readers all the knowledge you have, hold nothing back and be completely real. That’s what will take your blog and your writing to the next level.

If you work at a traditional job, then what little thing could you do at the “office’ that would get you that raise or promotion? What would make you a valuable member of the team?

A lot of these questions are specific and only you can answer them. You are the one who knows what little things you can do that would make you stand out. My job in this post is to show you that even though doing the little things might be more work, they will help you more than you’ll ever know.

A real life example

I flew to speak at a conference in Sydney, Australia in July of this year and Delta airlines put me on Virgin Australia. I was excited because I heard good things about Virgin but it was the little things they did that put them over the top for me.

Every international flight has meals but their meals looked like a five-star chef made them. Their flight attendants were over the top friendly and met every need. The things that other airlines charge for were FREE with Virgin.

The little things they did were so incredible that I tell everybody who listens that they’re the best, they gave me the WOW factor. This is what we need to strive for in all we do and this is how we will stand out.

What is one “little’ thing that you could do to stand out?
