Polly Fantastic post. As an amateur artist (of surrealism at that!), I found myself nodding in agreement throughout this entire post.
My friend and I were only just yesterday talking about what Card has brought up here. What makes art noticeable? Why do people like splatters of paint on a canvas? My friend mentioned how he recently saw a blank white canvas with poorly drawn shapes all over it (drawn in with blue pen!) and how disgusted he was that it had a $450 price tag attached to it. As an amateur artist who spends hours and hours trying to get better and coming up with "surreal" ideas, and then applying these things to a painting that I could never justify selling for $450 (in my mind), I shared my friend's disgust. By trying to do something that's "been done" in a moment of popularity, I feel in a lot of cases modern art is getting a bad name.
Another reason to read this post: Card shares a lot of fantastic websites with links to the works of incredibly talented artists!!!
