Until more details emerge, it’s difficult to know what to make of Vikram Pandit’s sudden resignation from Citicorp. In recent years, the mighty Citi, once of America’s largest banks, has been humbled on numerous occasions—most notably when the federal government had to bail it out during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. But even by Citi’s standards, it’s a bit unusual for the C.E.O. to quit without notice, effective immediately.
