That One-Eyed Badass Chick: Time For a Rant

That One-Eyed Badass Chick: Time For a Rant:

Okay, so this might be completely out of nowhere, but this is something that’s been sitting with me for a while and it’s recently been constantly in my head for some reason, so I really feel like I need to get it off my chest. Note that I love Secret Six. I think the series and (most of) the…

No problem at all, this is very interesting.

I disagree with some of what you’ve said here, but in a larger sense, I think there’s a problem with the idea that what a character does is somehow something the writer condones. That just isn’t the case, at all.

These ARE villains, for one thing. Floyd is never tasteful, he routinely kills people without a thought.

The thing about this being a ‘plot point,’ I hate to say it, but everything’s a ‘plot point.’

My thinking with Knockout is purely about her history. If you follow her character, she was exceedingly about sexuality, often on a moment’s notice. Her constant flirtation with Superboy (and basically everyone else) showed that. She was essentially built for that, if we follow her backstory.

But here’s the thing…she’s not from Earth. Why WOULD she have the same ideas about monogamy as someone raised here. Have you read the New Gods stuff, or followed Knockout over in Superboy?  It seems a little judgmental. Her culture is different.

Was it a bad decision, absolutely. Was it hurtful to Scandal, without question. But I maintain that knowing Knockout’s history, there’s nothing that surprising about it.

Also, when she DID find out that Scandal expected monogamy (well, until issue 36!), that was the end of Knockout looking for sex elsewhere.

Lots of couples maintain deep love with each other and have other partners for sex, it’s not some hideous, evil in itself, and warriors of Apokalips, who could be killed in battle, don’t have time for regrets or self-doubt.

All that stuff about cheating, I agree, cheating is bad. But one of the things that, I think sets Secret Six apart is that the characters do human things, they do foolish things, they do hurtful things. Part of the emotional component in the book is hoping they choose the right road, but they often do not do that.

It’s an interesting post you’ve written, no offense taken whatsoever, and I’m glad you like the book.
