SEASON OF THE WITCH//TOUR UPDATE PART 1: Columbus, Ohio.

The drive from New York (hometown) to Columbus took about 13 hours. It began optimistically, my best ‘on the road’ mix CDs narrating the journey. I was excited when I got my period in the first gas station I pulled over in because I was like HEY! EVEN MY BODY KNOWS THIS IS A NEW BEGINNING. When the sun went down, the dimmer switch of my excitement faded a bit too - but when I finally landed in Columbus, Ethan and Jordan were warm, welcoming, but not pushing me to be entertaining after so many hours of driving. I had my own room where I devoted myself to self-care, laying out a yoga mat, eating healthy, and taking all my vitamins (though, as it turns out, I’ve hardly ever had to use the Melatonin I brought on this trip. Sleeping has NOT been a problem thus far.) Immediately I could feel how this whole three-month excursion could be the sort of exhausting that would lead me to holing up in a room, napping excessively, and drowning myself in mediocre young adult literature. I could see the two potential roads I could take: the first being someone who simply ‘passed the time,’ the other, someone who lived the experience to the fullest. Right then and there I committed to being the latter. I had two great shows in Columbus, at Writing Wrongs and Travonna Coffee House where the audiences were warm & supported me by purchasing my books and CDs. I also got to hear a lot of poetry from Rachel Wiley that I hadn’t before, and thus fell in love with another poet’s work. If you have the chance, listen to her piece called “Marble.” I also tasted their food: fried avocado, Jeni’s Ice Cream, French Fry Food Truck, went for a hike by myself, and explored the city with my new friend Laura. The people of Columbus are sweet, friendly, and a bit above-and-beyond when it comes to friendship (read: Laura & Hanif coming over to the house I was staying at to bring me a soy latte before 8AM for my long drive ahead to Chicago.) Columbus, I love you.
