Hi! I really enjoy comics but I'm just not that into DC, i don't know why. I'd really like to like thier comics, do you have anything that might sway my opinion?
Well, hmmm. That’s an interesting question!
I think there are two ways to answer this—first, by just saying that there are some very good, very compelling books being published by DC (and other publishers) right now. I’m crazy for Batman, Demon Knights, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and several other titles. These are being done by some of my very favorite writers, and they really make the best case for jumping on board.
In a bigger sense, why jump onto DC, all I can say is that I love the shared universe idea. Most such universes have been the vision of one person, or connected heavily to one person. The DCU, even the new one, is inspired by many different really inventive minds, and the connective tissue fascinates me. I love that there’s a fiction that contains Gotham City AND an island of Amazons, I love that there are stories from the old West AND a group of teens from the future. And it connects in often surprising ways. It’s incredibly broad, even if we focus on a couple fictional cities a lot.
That’s what hooked me and hooks me still.
I think the Batbooks are a great place to come on board…people will think I am being self-serving, but I find the current crop of batbooks mostly very impressive and filled with the stuff I love, interesting, committed people who throw themselves against the night over and over, despite what it costs them as people. I love that, and most of the books are really quite delightful.
But if you are just looking to dip your toe in, you can’t go wrong with Demon Knights, All Star Western, I Vampire, Animal Man, or Swamp Thing.
