In "Circle," when Diana pledges herself to Kane, he tells her to "Keep faith, trust to love, fight with honor, but fight to win." I think that line is absolutely brilliant, it's 100% Wonder Woman (and damn good advice in general), and I want to incorporate
Wow, that is a great question!
Okay, first, that little mantra, I think it’s the best single bit of writing I have ever done, if I may say. I’m not sure exactly what inspired it, but it came out in a gulp, word for word, just as written, almost like a dream.
It’s been the piece of writing I have done that more people have mentioned to me than any other, often to the point of being a genuine inspiration. I know of several tattoos, and I know of several people who use it as their personal mantra…one guy used it to lose a ton of weight after an accident, if I remember correctly, and another used it to get out of an abusive relationship.
As for the ‘faith,’ part…this is a bit complicated, so STRAP IN. :)
First, I am an atheist in my personal life, I don’t really believe in gods or A God. So if I was writing it from my perspective, it would mean one thing. But I’m writing it from DIANA’s perspective, and she definitely believes in gods, as they show up for tea on a regular basis.
So, she could mean have faith in your gods, I imagine, it would be in character to a degree.
But even so, I think she means something bigger. I think she is saying have faith, in general. No Amazon should believe in blind faith, that leads to zealotry as shown in Alkyone’s case.
But faith in family, friends, and yourself, faith in your values, faith in hope, faith in effort to create a better world, I think those are the things Dinah is talking about. Dinah doesn’t really need to have faith in her gods, they exist, she can touch them and talk to them. She has, let’s say, conditional faith in most of them. But never blind faith.
I think the shorter answer would have been that faith is a pretty wonderful trait if coupled with honesty and empathy.
But my hope would be that people find the meaning in the word that most inspires them.
Hope that helps!
