Legend of Kali – The Dark Mother: Guest Post from Noree Cosper
Thanks to Boyce for hosting me. This series started from my love of strong female characters. I decided to search them out in history, myth, and legend.
Before I start with Kali, I should explain a little about Hindu religion. From what I understand there are three main gods and their consorts. They each have several incarnations or forms.

Kali is the consort of Shiva, the Destroyer. Kali’s name means “the black one.” Since Shiva is called Kala (the eternal time), Kali is also associated with death and time (as in your time is up).
Kali was born from Durga’s (her previous incarnation) brow during battle. Durga fought a lot of demons. Kali’s blood rage was so great that she started killing everything in sight.
To stop her, Shiva stuck his body under her foot. She stuck her tongue out in astonishment at this sight. Ahh, love.
Kali is depicted as one of the fiercest of gods. Still, her worshippers call her the Dark Mother because she does not have a caring side as shown when Shiva stopped her rage.
Incidentally, in Flower of Hell, the sword Gabby is after was created by Kali worshippers.
Kali shows us that even if we are strong we can still love. I like to keep this in mind through life.

About Noree
Noree Cosper loves writing about magic in the modern world. While growing up in Texas she constantly searched for mystical elements in the mundane. She buried her nose in both fiction and books about Wicca, Religion, and Mythology. Everyday became an adventure as she joined a group of role-players, acting out her fantasies of vampires, demons, and monsters living in the world.
She embraced her nerdom wholeheartedly.
Noree grew, but never left her love for fantasy and horror. Her dreams pushed her and her hand itched to write the visions she saw. So, with her fingers on the keys, she did what her heart had been telling her to do since childhood. She wrote.
