Revoke ban on RDF: Arundhati Roy

Writer and social activist Arundhati Roy on Sunday demanded an immediate revoke of the ban imposed on Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF) in the state.

Addressing the gathering at a meeting organised by the Viplava Rachaitala Sangham (Revolutionary Writers’ Association) against the ban, Roy termed the ban unconstitutional and urged the members to keep on with their struggle against state-sponsored violence. “RDF is not a armed organisation. It’s activities are in consonance with the Indian constitution. Then why is it banned?,” she questioned.

However, she said that the ban had indirectly helped the RDF in growing strong. “The ban has indirectly benefited the RDF. It has allowed it to grow stronger and the bond among it’s members and with the people grow deeper,” she said. She lauded RDF’s members for fighting for the human rights of the dalits and the adivasis in rural India.

“The ban has forced mass migration of RDF’s members from Hyderabad to either Delhi or to the rural parts of the state but still the organisation has grown stronger in the state capital, she said indicating to it’s swell of ranks during the first national conference of the RDF in Hyderabad on April this year.

However, she seemed a bit disappointed on finding no expression of emotion or anger on the faces of RDF’s members against the ban. “We have stopped thinking and fighting against inequality and discrimination in the society. That is why we are not getting angry,” she explained.

The RDF has limited itself to organising meetings in protest against violation of constitutional rights. It is unfortunate that governments are still using outdated oppressive colonial laws to suppress the democratic rights of the people, said president of the state unit of RPI and senior High Court advocate Bojja Tarakam. Virasam state secretary Varalakshmi, HRF president S Jeevan Kumar spoke on the occasion. The seven-year-old RDF is a democratic organisation active across India in fighting for the rights of the downtrodden.

message 1: by Jatin (new)

Jatin Pawar I was going through a few videos of Miss. Arundhati Roy on You Tube and also went through her blog. Her ideas appear to be anti establishment .Although her concerns are worth appreciating that disparity in India is growing which is not being adderessed but her views seem very extreme. She expresses her concerns but without any solutions(even her views are biased and not rational). She talks about India opening up it's market in 1991(liberalization,privatization,globalisation) as a black year in India's history!!(The point here being due to India not opening up it's market till 1991 we lost an early oppurtunity to establish industries in India and make Indian industries world class and competitive at world level). She talks about farmers commiting suicides and people getting displaced due to projects due to development!!I'm aware of the fact that rehabilitation should be done properly and in a more systematic and apt manner(Rehabilitation laws need to be made better, which I must say, is also being done as an amendment to the Rehabilitation law is being tabled). She must focus on this aspect rather than saying by saying that by builiding dams and mining we are destroying our country! How does she propose the country to move forward??!!!Unless industries are created, energy problems dealth with, how will we go forward!!Should we throw out our government!!!In her blog she writes "We should not be saying tax the rich, we should be saying take their money and redistribute it, take their property and redistribute it"!!And how must that be done?By picking up guns and killing the rich? Her ideas seem to be lurking with marxist and leftist ideologies. If that is the case she must also be made aware that no socialist society has been stable enough and now even China is moving towards democracy!!And the way she talks about the government which in India we appreciate as right to freedom of speech, she would have been penalised in China!!I will call this as an act of nature that arabs were put in deserts but with oil!,as be the case of our tribals who are found mainly in the resource and nature rich areas which makes them the focal point.Yes,it is true throwing them out of their homes is not democracy. They should be given proper place to live and be made skilful so that they can make their ends meet. And when government signs any mou these things should be given first priority. But it doesn't mean we go anti development. It is a globalized world out there. If we don't open up,if we don't develop industries we will fall behind as we already are due to opening up our economy late.Nuclear tests done by India opened up a new chapter in India's achievements.India being geographically blessed also is cursed with the worst neighbours. While commenting on India's nuclear programme she must take this into consideration.I don't support arm's race but then i don't want my countrymen to live in fear.My point of writing all this is whenever she gives an interview or talks about India in a public forum she must have balanced views. When she talks with a western jounalist she is potraying an unbalanced and a totally ideological view which is far fetched from reality. We are just 60 yrs old, britishers left us almost on the verge of a civil war,we are the most diverse country in the world(customs, mentalities) with the fastest growing population and exponentially rising needs, with such bad neighbours!!! India suffers poverty due to the oppressions and wealth drain that we suffered at the hand of Britishers for two decades!i.e 200 years! With our social evils and customs dating back to almost 1000 yrs back!!!We are just 60, we have corrupt politicians but they are being made accountable, the public is getting more aware,we have such diverse customs and religion which makes administration very difficuilt.Still we are growing and with time we will learn. We know our rehabilitation laws are bad but we are working to make them better. We also understand the maoists cause and concern. We are in transition where we are still learning and evolving and trying to become an inclusive nation.Miss Roy should be more constructive in her opinions rather than being so critical. It's good to be critical rather it's very important to be critical but it's very bad to be biased. Most importantly the idea should be to be more constructive.
