Waiting like a boss
DingThe simplest little sound, the notification of an email, can mean so much.
I’ve had two of my stories – my first ever completed stories, submitted to two different publishers for over six weeks now. Six weeks of absolute torture.
Six weeks might not seem like much, and realistically it isn’t. A lot of publishers and agents take over three months to send a reply, others longer. But six weeks of waking up hoping to receive feedback, six weeks of worrying about rejections, six weeks to dream about world domination and superstardom has driven me bat shit crazy. True story.
Every time I hear the ding I try to test myself. I don’t need to check my inbox straight away, it’s not going to be a contract offer, it’s not going to be a rejection. It’s probably an email about penis enlargements or mail order brides...if only I had a penis.
I try to sit back, relax, take a deep breath and continue with my life, but every time you know I’m gunna check to see what it is within fifteen seconds, maybe twenty if my phones out of reach.
And refresh! Oh, I haven’t checked my emails in ten minutes...my inbox is empty, refresh, refresh, refresh. Nope, still no email. Maybe it’s in the spam folder...nope.
Totally bat shit crazy – that is me.
Being an avid reader for years, I never truly contemplated how hard it would be to sit on the other side of the fence. From now until the day I die, contract or not, I will always appreciate the challenges authors have to go through to achieve the goal of publication.
And now I must cut my post short because I have to go check my emails.
