One of the things I remember about college is reading "Things Fall Apart", a novel that details how the mysticism of Christianity made it easier for tribal people to convert.

There is a dark side to religion, not just wars, but also the magical / mystical side of things that compels, fascinates, and terrifies us.

In the new novel, the villain uses his followers' curiosity and fear to control and manipulate, drawing them closer to him. But even as he cloaks himself in all that Old Time Religion, he has a secret that he's hiding, a dark and dangerous one.
