Marie-Florentine Geoffroy, R.I.P.

Aagh. This SUCKS. I met Marie-Flo at Pierre Feuille Ciseaux last October. She was quiet and shy with a fleeting, sweet smile, a shaved head and a newsboy cap. She was tall and thin, and dressed all in blacks and grays and navy blue. And she made phenomenally wonderful drawings. Drawings like her in some ways: quiet, thoughtful, a little mysterious, and singular. She spoke almost no english, and I spoke even less french, so our conversation was pretty limited. But we worked together on at least one jam exercise. And talked a bit one night at the bar with the help of some more multi-lingual friends. A few days ago she took her own life. I don't know. What do you say about this? It's not fair. She had more work to do. She shouldn't be gone yet. She had a great collection of deeply compelling found images on her facebook photo roll – though I'm sorry to say her facebook page has been taken down. But her blog, pretty-teeth, as of this writing, seems still to be up. Please go look. It's worth it. I barely knew her and this breaks my heart. My thoughts go out to her friends and family. The world is a poorer place.
