I love this scene, I think it’s a really powerful subtextual battle between the two of the most powerful fictional females ever created.



BUT, it is also the most widely interpreted scene I think I’ve ever written, and people really, really brought their own interpretation of the scene in fascinating and illuminating ways.

Some people hated it, they felt one character or the other was wildly out of character. Others really loved it.


To me, it’s a scene where each party has a nuke they don’t want to use. They both know what the other knows, but they can’t TALK about openly, in case they’re wrong, so the entire conversation is couched in code.


And in the end, Barbara way, way underestimated Lois, not just her skills as a digger for secrets, but as a person of ethics. Barbara was scared of Lois and got her motivations all wrong.


Which is a bit of a tragedy, because can you imagine them working together?
