Psalm 46 revisited

This chapter came to me last night via a lady in the midweek prayer group after she heard my fears surrounding possibly being asked to not merely write, but speak as a result of my writing. Those who know me, know that I am comfortable singing, writing, and generally supporting others in ministerial roles. But speaking is a whole other matter! Even when it came time for me to present a prayer of repentance one year, I read it and kept my head down so as to avoid a video camera aimed my direction. Even sharing these fears at prayer last night led to tears.

I didn't get a chance to read this Psalm again till tonight. It speaks of God being my fortress, my refuge and my strength. It describes God being strong on my behalf, quelling wars and shattering kingdoms. This psalm encourages me to be still and know that my God, is indeed God! That it is He who will be exalted above the heathen!

Suddenly a picture entered my head! This scene is most often associated with mythical men of reknown standing atop hills or mounds of earth, surrounded by those they have conquered, lifting a weapon high in the sky as they look off into the distance or up into the clouds with a triumphant look on their face. But instead of some mythical hero standing there, suddenly I saw God! I realized as I reread this psalm, that this is the description of One who is worthy of being hidden within, that this is One who, unlike mythicial heroes, really can offer protection and fight our battles in the here and now!

My God is the victorious One! He is the One I can hide behind, under whose wings I can trust!

Now to remember this if and when my fears stare me in the face again!
