So how do you stay creative and prolific when your day job sucks the very soul out of you?
here’s what worked for me:
clean your bedroom. put everything you own in boxes in the middle of the floor. dust, swiffer, mop everything. move around some furniture if you can, some of the wall decorations. then go through what you have in boxes and put it all away, making sure that everything you decide to keep fits you, and you find it purposeful, useful, or beautiful. Once you part with all the excess shit holding you down and beautify your surroundings, you will be much more apt to create.
In your new and beautiful space, play music & light candles often.
Read as much as possible. Short stories, novels, poetry books, essays, newspapers. Not Facebook. Really read. It is the most important fuel there ever was.
Download the “Self-control” app for your computer. This site can block your favorite sites to procrastinate on for as long as you want. Sometimes I’ll block Tumblr, Facebook & Gmail for 3 hours and just write.
Stop judging yourself. Some days your writing/art is going to suck, but you have to exercise the muscle so that when the good ideas come flowing, you’ll have the tools to implement them with. (That was a lazy mixed metaphor, but you get the point.)
Carry a notebook. Try to make time to write *something* every day. It does not have to be long or good, just something.
Experience life. Art doesn’t come from always being locked in a room waiting for it to happen. Go out to dinner, movies, drink wine, parties, call friends, take walks, and pay attention. It’s all happening around you.
Write.
