(Also wow that would be so sad, thinking you're getting to see Patrick Stewart and then being told you can't ;_;)

I kind of feel that way too sometimes... mostly because at one anime con I was at, there was a dub producer type person there. And he had people go on stage pretending they were trying out for dub voice actor parts. He had it all set up where the people had the lines to read with the anime visual only/sound muted.
The first people who went up on stage to try were decent and one was even pretty good, but then the producer guy started urging them to do these really stupid accents and be over the top and it wasn't until they were doing an awful job that he said it was good.
I guess his view of 'good' is diametrically opposed to my view of 'good.'
That being said, I was at a con where the person who chose the English dub voices for the Cowboy Bebop movie (I want to say it was the voice actress for Nuriko in FY but I could be wrong). And she was really nice and really interested in making sure she did the best job getting good voices. I haven't seen the movie but I've heard they did a pretty good job on it in the English, even by people who hate dubs.
So I think a large part of it is the direction that these companies for some bizarre reason want the voice actors to take.
And then of course there are the 4Kidz of the world who butcher the series itself by editing and chopping up the original story and then add grating voices on top of it (One Piece is the best example imo). That's when dubbing really does seem like more of a disservice than anything to the original series, at least to me.

You could always sneak into one of his Star Trek panels next weekend. I'm sure the singing will happen again, what with a bunch of nerds congregating. =)"
I am so nerdy too because I used to LOVE Reading Rainbow XD I was always a dorky reader so it was like this amazing tv show to me, plus Lavar Burton just rocks all around.
Does anyone remember an old show probably in the 80s or early 90s that was about some woman who may or may not have been a witch, and she had this machine that she would drop things into (like, say, a hat, a feather, and a horseshoe) and the machine would chug, chug, chug, then spit out a book that she would read? She was one of those Sound of Music/Mary Poppins type ladies who was pretty and young and nice. I can't remember the name of this show....

Also yeah I wanted to throw a pillow at the dude's head XD A very densely packed pillow...
I can usually make it through Miyazaki-type films dubbed because they're usually done a little bit better than the norm. But what drives me nuts is that normal actors like, say, Brad Pitt in Sinbad, do a better job than voice actors in, say, Sailor Moon. (Brooklyn accent for Molly? Really?) It's just weird because normal actors would have a legitimate reason to suck compared to voice actors since they might rely on a lot of visual cues in their performances to show the audience how they feel, but voice actors are all about the voice. And yet it seems the opposite is how it ends up.
I suppose the biggest issue(?) is that a lot of times I feel like the American (at least, I don't know about other countries) companies that focus on anime and manga don't seem to have that awesome of a grasp of what the fans actually want and consider valuable.

"Hey John! Fahren wir ins Las Vegas!"

Even though I find dubbing utterly horrendous, it was fun hearing actors (and especially Robert de Niro and Al Pacino) say things like "puta madre!" instead of "motherfucker!" when I lived in Spain.

Marleen and Lenore-- lol that is amusing me to think about. It always throws me off a bit to see Hollywood films dubbed because it's also usually voices that are SO off from the original actor it's sometimes hilarious and sometimes creepy-distracting XD
Sara -- does that mean you also couldn't get into GoT? By the way I emailed you, finally.
Silver Iris -- oh awesome you're also Wiccan? We should talk about that sometime! I had started rambling about it in the comment that I lost and now I don't remember what I said. By the way I haven't been to lj much this week yet but I hope to be able to focus on it a bit more coming up :)
