Explaining The Bourne Legacy
Chatting with some folks over the weekend and mentioned that Mike and I were going to go see The Bourne Legacy on Sunday.
Have you ever found yourself trapped in a conversation that only happens because you are surrounded by stupid people? And you can’t get out of the conversation without seeming rude or outright calling people stupid?
Person A: I don’t understand why they replaced Matt Damon with Hawkeye [Jeremy Renner]. Nobody else can play Jason Bourne!
Person B: He’s not playing Jason Bourne. He’s playing Jason Bourne’s son. That’s why it’s called the Bourne Legacy.
Me: No, he’s not playing Jason Bourne’s son. He’s playing Aaron Cross.
Person A: So who is playing Bourne?
Me: Nobody is playing Bourne.
Person B: I thought he was supposed to be related to Bourne.
Me: No, he’s not related to Bourne.
Person A: If Jason Bourne isn’t in it how can it be a Bourne movie?
Me: The events in this movie are triggered by the events in the last movie. Everything is happening concurrently.
Person B: How are they gonna do that? Are they reediting the last movie to add this new guy?
Person A: They can’t put Hawkeye in the last movie. That would be weird.
Person B: They could reedit it and rerelease. That would be cool.
Person C: Lucas did it with Star Wars.
Person B: Renner wasn’t in Star Wars, was he?
Me: No.
Person A: George Lucas is directing this?
Me: NO! They aren’t reediting anything. The events from the last movie are the reason why the events in the new movie happen. The two movie plots are happening at the same time. The concept is that they are expanding the Bourne universe so that you see that there were other programs and how the events from the first movies have created a dominos effect throughout all of the programs.
Person A: So who is Aaron Cross?
Me: He’s an agent in a different program.
Person C: Yeah they did something with his DNA or something right?
Person A: So they used Bourne’s DNA to make this Cross guy?
Person B: So it is sort of like Bourne’s son!
Me: *migraine kicks in* Sure, whatever.
