Out with the clean, in with the dirty: exporting natural gas and importing oil

Shale drilling has unleashed an apparent abundance of natural gas, but is it simply a commodity governed purely by the short-term concerns of the free market, or is it a valuable natural resource that could provide a cleaner, more secure fuel supply that would reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil?
