The unexpected novella

I've recently had the urge to write about Nikolai Krasnorada, Vadim's son. If you don't know who I'm talking about, you're not a Special Forces reader, but I hope the story will make sense to you anyway.

For those who do know what I'm talking about, rejoice, there's more Vadim coming your way. Despite the Noble Romance drama (no word yet from the new CEO of the company), I've been patiently tapping away, adding more words to words, and generally been chiselling away (though productivity was low and some weeks, absolutely nothing happened). I sometimes feel like a penguin who scoures the icy wasteland for stones to build a nest.

Well, this one's nearly done. The working title is kind of silly, but I'm calling the story Gold Digger (which is really a joke wrapped in a pun that may not work for anybody but me). Nikolai's probably the sanest of the Krasnoradas, and he gets to hang out with his father, sort out his family/father/commitment issues, and I'm hoping to leave him with a solid, hopeful Happy For Now/Happily Ever After ending. It's a gentle contemporary romance around the theme of family (and how our blood relations mess us up and how they can heal us), and some is unabashed fan service.

I was expecting this to hit around 15-20k when I started it, but obviously I was wrong again. It won't be a novel, but a chunky novella, and if Riptide is interested in it, they can have it. The big challenge is to get it into a shape where even non-SF readers understand the characters. And, obviously, please my hyper-critical editor/s.

I'm also working on the Country Mouse sequel with Amy, which might be done by end of the month, and after that, I'm digging right back into WWII. I have two really good novels set in the period and I can't wait to get backwards in history after doing two contemporaries. I expect to spend the autumn/winter doing those two and a historical urban fantasy book I'm wrestling with (doing some outlining and brainstorming there).

*pats muse* I appreciate the detour in your schedule. :)

Maybe this "breather" will recharge your WWII batteries for a few months of concentrated serious stuff.

Kaje Harper Great news. *big grin*

Christina "......there's more Vadim coming your way". This makes me a very happy girl!

message 4: by Carey (new)

Carey Glad to hear about Nikolais story as well as a sequel to Country Mouse, yay!

message 5: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Kate - I sometimes think he does that just to remind me who's in charge. :)

Kaje - I hope so. Following up a "cult classic" is always dangerous, but I think Vadim's pretty cool in this one.

Christina - Yep. He's mostly in a supporting role, but he get plenty of camera time. :)

Carey - Yep. That'll likely be my output for the rest of the year, though. Novels just take so much longer.

Morgiana well...*sighs*
part of my heart is really happy to hear from Vadim
'Hallo Vadim, nice to meet you again';) and his family,
but...in my head and heart I have a little nice story about Nikolai, and somehow I dont't think this will be the same story with Aleks;)
so this time I am not really happy about this, but am a bit confused, so don't mind me
*shrugs*
I know it will be a great story with the sanest member of the Krasnoradas, with a lot of Vadim (yeah, that's great), and with a lot of fun and other things - just am trying to compute this information.
Hope I won't struggle too long;)

message 7: by Steve (new)

Steve Wonderful news! And don't be afraid to make it a very "chunky novella." The more , the better. The idea of a sane Krasnorada is intriguing.

Sarah ♥ dog crazy ♥ ... there's more Vadim coming your way

I've only read 1/3 of Soldiers so far but since I am already in love with Vadim, I'm so happy to hear that. :-)

Lisa Arbitrary - AttentionIsArbitrary M/M Blog "unabashed fan service".

Works for me!

;)

oooh, can I greet a new Vadim fan in our little happy insane society?;)

message 11: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Morgiana - Please feel free to ignore my version and continue with your own. :)

Steve - We're looking at 40k or a little over it, which is on the short side, but should still be a fun read. :)

Sarah - Yep, he only gets better after his initial nastiness. :)

Lisa - Yep, me too. :)

message 12: by Morgiana (new)

Morgiana Aleks, I don't think I could resist my curiosity and most probably I will read about the sanest member of the Krasnorada's (or at least give a try).
Let's see, but if I don't like it, I will feel free myself to ignore your version...and stick to mine;)
(so bad, I like your style...:P)

message 13: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Hah. Fair enough!

Morgiana You see?;)
We are soooo fair...
*winks*

message 15: by DeWanda (new)

DeWanda Sounds fun, a sane Krasnorada is a MUST read IMHO.

You can! :-) Even the hubby already knows that he has to STFU when I spend time with "my Russkie." LOL

Aleksandr wrote: "Sarah - Yep, he only gets better after his initial nastiness. :)"

Oh, he does... and I still have so much more to read... Very excited!

Nallux wrote: "And to Sarah...welcome to the fanclub ;)"

Thank you! *squeals* But no surprise to see you here, I know you have a good taste. ;-)

Morgiana ok, my fault, didn't warned you before it is to easy to be addicted to the SF...
so now, you are an Official SF-Junkie - if you didn't notice it before.
*grinning*

Steve 40k's a start, Aleks. Would be interesting to see how this kid discovers his family history, his reaction to it, and what life route he chooses as a result, given the talents he's bound to inherit. And I can always do with a little more Vadim, even in a supporting role.

Speaking of SF junkies - I'm into it for the second time, already, interspersed with other reading. Not as tense, obviously, but just as much fun.

message 19: by Arzu (new)

Arzu perfect ... more Vadim ... thank you!

message 20: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov DeWanda & Nallux - Even a face-chewing cannibal is saner than the average Krasnorada, so, yeah, it's an easy goal to achieve, but Nikolai would even fit into a "normal" family. :)

Steve - Yeah, Gold Digger addresses all those things to varying degrees. Family, how they shape us, how they mess us up and how we can move forward. After writing 40k on Nikolai, I really, really like him. He'll do fine in the place where I'm going to leave him.

Arzu - I can always re-work Vadim into a different world/setting (like Dark Edge of Honor). But there's a very limited anount I can do to him now. (Hey, the guy's very nearly 63 (August 15th - we should have a party) - I think he deserves retirement. :)

message 22: by Mandie (new)

Mandie Foxylutely There's certainly life in the old dog yet as the saying goes and 63? Isn't that the new 43? LOL

Oh and *squee* thank you for Nikolai's story (Gold Digger?) I heart you :)

message 23: by Morgiana (new)

Morgiana Aleks, sorry, but a retiring Vadim is almost unbelievable...;)

message 24: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Mandie - I'm not sure how interesting his fencing club activities are, to be honest. :) It's not an age where he can go gallivanting around the world fighting wars. :) Yep, Gold Digger is Nikolai's story. :)

Morgiana - He's actually quite happy to be retiring, honest. :)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

And I've just found this thread! I'm a little slow on the uptake :-) Cannot wait for more of my favourite literary character ever (and his "son" of course) Thanks Aleks xx

message 26: by Morgiana (new)

Morgiana Aleks, ok, I believe you what else could be done?:)

message 27: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Cothern I never think I can love you more.... then you prove me wrong! Since I just finished Soldiers (which is probably why my muse is all worked up... thanks!) and have already started Mercenaries, I can't wait to read this!

By the way... are you doing anything special for Vadim for his birthday on Wed. (Aug. 15th)? I think we should have a chat party with him! I have an mIRC (paid account) room we could use *grin* Let me know if Dan doesn't already have plans and maybe we can surprise Vadim!

message 28: by Steve (new)

Steve Definitely do something for Vadim's birthday!

And, hey, all this "retiring" talk is nonsense. He and I are close to the same age and almost the same birthday (I said in a previous post that I "know" these guys), so I can freely say he's got plenty of life left in him.

@nallux - I'm actually enjoying it more the second time around - much more relaxed read this time and able to get into the characters more.

message 29: by Steve (new)

Steve Aleks, I read your other post today (on Slash and Burn) on Gold Digger and I'm really interested in the logistics of writing "around" characters owned by other writers. Must be incredibly difficult in that you can't really mention them, write away the relationship, or even kill them off. Doesn't that compromise your storytelling abilities? Maybe you see it as more of a challenge?

message 30: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Steve - Well, you can be active in retirement. I would assume Vadim might still consult every now and then, possibly write analysis, though it's hard for him because of the PTSD issues. He's also running a fencing club in Palmerston North, and teaches self-defense, so plenty to keep him busy.

Regarding "writing around" - well, I don't see Vadim getting divorced, whatever my personal feelings about Dan. The relationship does work for him, and I think I could deal without the hate emails if I dared "free" him by divorce. I can't really kill Dan off either, because then I'd have to deal with the emotional fall-out, essentially writing hundreds and hundreds of pages about a dead Dan, which doesn't really interest me, either. I'm very done with that.

I think storytelling thrives on finding workarounds; I'm not mentioning the two people that *might* have gotten involved in Gold Digger (Dan and Kisa), but the relationship with Kisa is uncomplicated. When you're at peace with a relative living abroad, it can happen you never hear from them for years, because all is well and there's no need. Secondly, we know that Dan travels to meet various people, and Vadim travels to meet various people, and while Dan is gone somewhere, Vadim gets on with his life, and that's one of those weeks I cover in Gold Digger. He's dealing with his relationship to his son, and that's his primary focus. He might think about Dan, but since we're never in his head, I don't have to write that. :)

message 31: by Casey (new)

Casey Cox Sounds like you have the 'write-arounds' well and truly covered.

Will look out for the release of this one :)

message 32: by Fangtasia (new)

Fangtasia I've got nothing to add, it's all been said. But I just have to cheer for more of the Krasnoradas. Lovely!

Looking forward to it, thanks!

message 33: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov You're welcome! It's now in edits. :)

message 34: by Carey (new)

Carey I'm so happy to hear you say that you will not kill Dan off or divorce him...that would really ruin my previous HEA. And as I've already invested a whole lot of time and freaking tears on their story I would rather it be left alone, if you don't want to right about Dan (or can't?) then I think you have the right idea with your "write-arounds". I am really excited to read about Nikolai, and more from Vadim!
