Character Interview: Michelle Lowe & Nikolai from “The Warning”
After a little break last week, this week we return to Character Interview Thursdays with Nikolai from Michelle Lowe’s The Warning, and happy to have you both here!

Mia: What is the name of the book where we’ll find you? Can you tell us a little about it?
Nikolai: It’s titled The Warning. What can I say about it? Umm, well, for starters, it’s a science fiction/mystery that takes place in New York City, 2027. Wait. How am I talking to you from the future? (Shrugs) Oh, well. Anyway, I’ve been set up for my ex-girlfriend’s murder, (Rolls eyes)—yippee— and the only way I can clear my name is relying on help from this human clone called Alpha Replica 3007. Who by the way, has a wicket tempter you don’t wanna cross. Let’s see, there’s Lucas Knox, the detective assigned to find me before his crazy intuition gets him off my back and he goes hunting for the real killer. Then there’s Marko and his crew the Organization that rob a bank before blowing it up, but it’s not money they’re after.
And where there are human clones there’s a mad scientist. Dr. David Linden has his own lab on Mill Rock Island where he created the Alphas and has started on the Beta Replicas. I bump into one Beta periodically throughout the story. Not fun. And then there’s Jade Sho, my murdered ex. She had broke-up with me right before her death, which tore me apart because I love her so much I consider her my soul mate. Then I find out she apparently knew she might die and ended our relationship to protect me. While running from the cops and staying out of sight from anyone wanting to collect the four million dollar bounty on my head, courtesy of Jade’s father—Mayor of New York City—I’m following clues she left for me. With each clue I find it, draws closer to the reason why she was assassinated.
Mia: Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?
Nikolai: I’m just a computer nerd. An entrepreneur in fact. I have a dream to start my own anti computer virus business. Other than being the most wanted man in the world for a night, there’s nothing too exciting to say about myself. My place in the story, however, is vital in terms of getting the truth behind Jade’s death out to entire world. Simply by being involved with her, I’ve been roped into this elaborate conspiracy filled with murder, secrets, and lies.
Mia: What do you think of the author? Be honest. We won’t tell.
Nikolai: Lowe is burial when it comes to her writing. She better hope our place in the world doesn’t switch where I’m at the keyboard and she’s my character to toy with. She put me through hell throughout the whole f***ing story, from getting the s**t beat out of me, to getting arrested more than once, not to mention the emotional turmoil that will probably end up giving me a tumor somewhere.
Mia: How do you feel about the story you’re in?
Nikolai: It’s not half bad. I mean, it’s bloated with action, mystery, betrayal, and table turning. What you think happened didn’t really happen as it played out, and some people aren’t who they appear to be. It’s also a very in depth story with hidden meanings. I wouldn’t mind reading it if I hadn’t already lived it.
Mia: Do you like being a character in the book?
Nikolai: Just between you and me, I’d like to be in an action/adventure. Maybe a steampunk mad genius that builds cool things. But I guess I can’t complain much. I could’ve been ended up being some f***ed up drug addict, or worse, a politician!
Mia: How do you see your future? Without giving anything away about the story, naturally.
Nikolai: Quietly! (Laughs) After everything I went through, I see myself spending the rest of my days living in a small cottage by the beach.
Mia: What do you know about your author’s plans? Can we expect to see you in any future stories?
Nikolai: Honestly, I can’t say. Lowe and I haven’t really kept in touch since The Warning’s completion. I’m guess she’s out there working on other stories, putting more characters through hell. I suppose anything is possible, and y’know, even after everything, I wouldn’t mind being in a sequel—so long as I’m not killed.
Mia: Let’s say they make a movie about this book. Who do you want to play you, and why?
Nikolai: Wow. Umm, let me think a moment on that. (Taps chin) Thomas Dekker, the actor who was in the film, Foreverland and the TV show The Sarah Connor Chronicles. He’s a great actor and he fits my description. I’d be completely confident that Dekker would portray me very well.

Author Bio: Michelle Lowe was born June 18th, 1979 in Clayton County Georgia and raised in Peachtree City. In ’98 she attended college for graphic design, only to leave to pursue a writing career. Currently she lives in Florida with husband Ben and daughters, Mia and Kirsten. Right now she’s busy working on a nonfictional book, Cherished Thief, a sci-fi/fantasy titled, Atlantic Pyramid, a dark thriller novella, Storyteller, and a children’s fantasy, The Hex Hunt, with future plans to begin on a three part dark fantasy series, Legend in time of the Ages.
