The Reading Habits of One Writer

I've noticed my number of read books has fallen off this year. I track this stuff on Goodreads. This might give me cause for alarm or worry. It doesn't. I haven't grown lazy or tired of reading. I just stay busy with writing my own books. I'm a paid book reviewer, so I do read those books. I also do a lot reading online, so that has to count. Plus, I read the Sports columns each morning for the fun of it.

Then there are my novels. Depending on what else is going on, I probably "read" anywhere from 50-100 pages per day. I'm not bragging, just saying that involves the act of reading words. Maybe that's the crux of the matter. After spending all day with the printed word, my eyes demand I spend my down time doing something else. I remember Max Alan Collins saying on a panel at a book festival he doesn't read other books while he's writing his own.

On the other hand, I've always been a streaky reader like a baseball hitter is at the plate. Maybe I'll feel my habit kick in again. So, until then, I'll keep on reading the Sports section, and, of course, writing.

Josh A paid book reviewer- nice one. Hell I'd be up for that for just the books, forget about the cash! I generally like to read 100pgs a day minimum but tent to hit around 150-200. Really depends on how much I'm enjoying a book. Nice post Ed .

Wow. You're a fast reader. I appreciate the comments and good words. Thanks, Josh.

I hadn't thought of the seasonal variations. As a kid and out of school for the summer, it was always a wonderful time to stock up on books at the public library and read all day. I never seemed bored. Or at least that's how I remember it. Thanks, Marietta.

Michele bookloverforever I read a lot but my reading list is lower this year as well mostly due to the fact i am caring for someone with dementia and my reading time has become limited. also, spending more time on line as well. but still read at least 6 books/wk. I read very fast and it is my way of escaping: no calories, no alcohol or drugs and not illegal.

Maybe the more limited time makes the reading time more enjoyable. I think so now that I consider it.
