After a lifetime of reading, this has to be one of the best books I have ever read. The author led me into a world on the brink of breakdown. A mass killing on the outskirts of town tests the local police who are trying to keep up their standards in the face of nation wide hopelessness. The author introduces the different viewpoints of the characters in a way which builds up the picture as a whole without any clumsy information dumps. The increase in pace and tension is perfect with each character and I defy anyone to put this book down after the half-way mark. This is the gold standard of writing and I can’t wait for the sequel. Highly recommended at any price.
