What is a hero?

There can be a significant difference between a protagonist and a hero. For me, the protagonist is the main character, the person whose story drives the plot. He may even be detestable. A hero is someone, real or imaginary, I learn to care about. In a romance novel, I want the hero to be someone I could fall in love with. What do you think?
