The Writing Gospel According To...(insert name here)

I read Steph Bowe's really interesting (not to mention useful) summation of several notable authors' rules for writing a little earlier on today. (Have a look at it here). It came along at an opportune time, to be honest, because I'm literally right in the middle of planning the course material and content for one of the units I'm teaching this semester - Introduction to Creative Writing. rivka King's book is quite good. So is OSC's Characters and Viewpoint.

Good luck with the class!

Anthony Eaton Don't get me wrong - usually I love to fly by the seat of my pants. It's just that after the last 12 months, they're kinda worn through...

rivka Actually, teaching is one of those things I always tried very hard to avoid the seat-of-the-pants thing with. There's no comparison between a really prepared teacher and one who is less so, and I always felt like I was cheating my students when I didn't have adequate prep time. It's actually one of the reasons I got out of teaching, was the consistent lack of prep time and the fact that such was not specifically provided as such by my employer.

Anthony Eaton Flippant comments aside, I'm exactly the same. It's one of the things I'm liking about uni teaching - it's expected that you're prepared, and so workloads are set accordingly. It's nice after the rush of high school teaching.
