Friends, if you have a couple of minutes,
would you please take a look at the 2 possible covers for my upcoming
novel Oleander Girl which my publisher, Free Press, just sent me, & give me your opinion? I'd really value your input before I make a decision.

Unfortunately I can't seem to upload the images here, so please go to https://www.facebook.com/chitradivakaruni, and vote for
the one you prefer (version A yellow, or version B white). Please,
if you have a moment, tell
me why you like it better.

You can comment on this blog or on FB. I do appreciate your time!

Below is a brief description of Oleander Girl,
so you'll have a sense of which cover is more fitting.

Thanks as always for your support of my writing.

OLEANDER GIRL, A SNEAK PEEK

Korobi Roy, heir of an old and distinguished Kolkata household, has met
and fallen in love with Rajat, the only son of the Boses, a high-profile
nouveau riche business family. Their engagement is a grand affair, but that
same evening Korobi's grandfather, who has brought her up since the death of
her mother at Korobi's birth, passes away. He leaves behind a dark secret, at
once devastating and exhilarating, which will shatter Korobi's sense of self
and will thrust her out of her sheltered Kolkata life into a courageous and
troubled search, with few resources, across
post 9/11 America, a country that she finds at once dangerous,
unwelcoming and alluring. What she discovers at the end will force her to make
the most difficult choice of her life.

Meanwhile in India
Rajat must struggle with his own challenges--outbreaks of Hindu-Muslim violence,
in the wake of the Godhra riots, in the Bose's warehouse; money problems
stemming from the vandalism of their New York art gallery; an ex-girlfriend who
refuses to let him go; and his own jealous suspicions as Korobi travels through
America in the company of a disturbingly attractive private investigator named
Vic.

Set against a
fast-changing world of social, economic and political tensions in India and
America that will force the characters to question the beliefs and
preconceptions they have grown up with, Oleander
Girl
is ultimately an exploration of the nature--and the cost--of love, and
the ways in which it can help us survive in the midst of hate.

Nicole The yellow version and reminds me most of your other work (the style is very similar to Sister of My Heart and Unknown Errors of Our Lives), although I like how my eye is drawn to the middle, rather than the bottom, on the white version.

Thanks for the sneak peek! I can't wait to read it when it comes out!

Chitra Divakaruni Thanks, Nicole. That's very helpful.

message 3: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne Blue I prefer the white one, with the background lettering. The yellow one seems a bit too olde worlde.

Looking forward to the book.

message 4: by Sheila (new)

Sheila I think I would have to agree with Nicole. The white cover is nice but I feel like the yellow one seems more appropriate and fits in nicely with the covers that you have had on previous novels.

message 5: by Lucyloo (new)

Lucyloo i looked at the white first and thought i liked that one, but then the yellow (i'm going to call it sepia) dawned onto my screen. and I felt that if i saw these 2 books side by side in a bookstore I would feel very compelled to pick up the (Yellow) sepia toned one with the Oleander in full bloom.

message 6: by Lucyloo (new)

Lucyloo Why? hmm i guess because I'm More attracted to "ole World', exotic looking pictures or art on book covers that make me feel as if I'm going to be transported away to a faraway place. Also the Yellow feels more like a painting whereas the white cover , lovely as it is looks like a clipped photograph placed on a sketch

message 7: by Lucyloo (new)

Lucyloo Personally, i think you should publish in both covers, its a fun gimic that always makes me stop and look when a book has different covers I stop and examine them and wonder about why they chose to publish 2 different covers. Either Way I'm excited as always when you have a new book

message 8: by Gina (new)

Gina I like the white cover. It's very striking. Can't wait to read this one. Love all your books Chitra.

message 9: by Anne (new)

Anne I like the whiter one. The yellow one is striking but suggests more of a romance narrative. Either is good - so long as your name stands out and the "...Mistress of Spices" bit.

message 10: by Chaitali (new)

Chaitali Love the white one. Can not wait to read the book. When will it hit the stands ?

message 11: by Pam (new)

Pam The white one is the best. Looking forward to the book.

Chitra Divakaruni Thanks so much, everyone, for your helpful input. My publisher has chosen the white cover, because it seems more indicative of the novel. Oleander Girl will be published in March 2013 in the U.S. If you write to me at chitra.divakaruni.list@gmail.com, I'll put you on my newsletter list & send you the details of my book tour.
Also, at some point my publisher will do a giveaway of advance reading copies through Goodreads, so watch for that!
