I almost peed my pants
Wallflower in Bloom by Claire Cook was OMG, rip roaring, hilarious! I laughed out loud so many times that my significant other went into the other room to work (I think spitting wine out my nose was the last straw for him).
While I also enjoyed Claire’s first book, Must Love Dogs which turned into a major motion picture, this book topped that one in my humble opinion. Why? because it was so real. Claire created the main character Deirdre Griffin as every normal woman often sees herself. A little chubby, a little out of shape, a little bored, a little boring, and just not the bright shiny selves we once thought we were in our twenties when we still thought we were invincible and varicose veins and grey hair was something that happened to other people not us. But she did it in a way that wasn’t self deprecating or overly woe is me. It was more, “hey what the hell happened to me and I’m going to make a change today if it kills me” kind of spunk.
The twist that Claire adds with Deirdre getting herself voted on to Dancing with the Stars as a non celebrity dancer is again a believable tale and one many of us women can identify with as being a fun thing we would love to try.
The writing is funny, well crafted, and fast paced. I picked it up and I read the whole thing. A few days later I read it again because I was in a bad mood and even though I knew what was going to happen I wanted to cheer myself up. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good laugh!
