APE IN A CAPE: Something To Think About…
![]()
Dear Oracle-fans, New 52 haters, etc…
I understand your frustration against Barbara…
I think it’s because she’s the only one to have been rebooted like this in the Bat-Family. Gotham sort of operates like a mini-verse within the larger DC universe, if that makes any sense, so being the only one there to be “downgraded” stands out more.
I would add that it also just doesn’t make any sense to me that she would go back to being Batgirl after establishing her own identity as Oracle. It’s like if Nightwing
had gone back to being Robin. Even if it’s only been a few years in this universe, it’s been decades for the fans and we still think of her as having been Oracle for a lot longer. Also, it sucks that that that Steph project fell through.
People keep saying that but it just really isn’t true. Huge chunks of Nightwing, Red Hood, and even Batman history are not in continuity yet and probably won’t be.
Batgirl’s push back made a much bigger visual difference, but we are still talking about a Batman with a much lesser JLA history, and hundreds of stories that haven’t happened, a different Joker with much less history, a new Mr. Freeze, essentially, some villains have yet to make their first appearance, Nightwing’s history is changed, they’re almost all younger…I don’t know what batbooks you guys are reading but that’s all right there on the page, you know?
I think you just hit the nail on the head yourself.
Dick and Bats may have had a big chunk of their history undone/rewritten, but its a lot more apparent with Babs.
Bruce, Dick, even Damien all appear at least to be at the same level of skill and experience as they were before the reboot. But Barbara has had a noticeable reduction in her skill since her return to the Batgirl identity. It makes her seem like a lesser member of the Bat-family to all of the sudden drop in skill level while even a child like Damien coasts a long as if the reboot never happened. This inconsistency is one of the things that really angers people about her situation and , reall, about the New 52 reboot in general. Batman and his boys (and the Lanterns to an even greater extent) just get to go on as if (almost) nothing happened while everybody else has to start over from varrying degrees of scratch.
You cant have your cake and eat it too. DC should have rebooted everything to square one or nothing, at least then there would be no question about who is at what point in their history and what old stories still count or not.
Eh, I kind of hate that every time someone says they like the book and I respond, it becomes this thread.
I’m sure a thousand readers all have an idea of what ‘should’ have been done, but the simple truth is, most people’s concerns are different. Everyone’s ‘should have’ is subjective and not that interesting to the readership at large. And the New52 is still a big success, despite the stumbling blocks. I can’t second guess that stuff, I can only work on the books I am working on and try to make them as good as possible.
I agree in principle that if they were going to do it, it might have been cooler to go all the way to a total reboot. But I also feel kind of not that interested in sticking at that frozen moment forever. There’s a lot I miss, but there’s a lot to like, and the gaps are starting to be filled in, that’s a positive thing to me.
