The Same Sun
There has been yet more sunlight in my life, so it has once again crossed into this poem, just like it did last time with ‘Moderation’, although in a different way in this one, I think. Regardless, I hope you enjoy reading this poem – it’s the thirty-seventh entry in this series of song-inspired poems!
First Poem In This Series: To Witness, To Behold, inspired by ‘Sowing The Seeds Of Love’ by Tears For Fears
Previous Poem In This Series: Moderation, inspired by ‘Real World’ by The All-American Rejects
The Same SunSometimes, the sun shines–
incredible, I know–
and for a moment,
caught between breezes,
there is heat on my skin.
Only it is the skin
of a seven–eight–nine–
does the number matter?–
of a child, barefoot,
feeling grass that is
too yellow, too sharp
to be familiar–
and as my hand–
my adult hand–
rises, valiantly,
to shield my eyes,
I find that they
are not adult eyes–
they are that child’s,
staring up, wondering
how this could ever
be the same sun.
The child is called
back to the caravan–
the child belongs
to the chemical smell
of sun cream;
the adult breathes
car fumes, crosses
concrete–lunch
is over, and the sun,
this sun, so separate–
it dips behind the clouds,
and the two selves part.
