Re-releasing Remember My Name

We’re coming up on Halloween and I wanted to celebrate spooky times in some way, so I’m re-releasing Remember My Name.

Years ago, I was asked to write a flash fiction short story for a zombie apocalypse-themed anthology called Gimme Shelter, edited by JR Blackwell. The morning JR contacted me, I happened to be on vacation visiting the city of Seattle with Matthew J. Drake (years before we decide to live there).

I was very excited by the concept of the project and asked a few clarifying questions like: Body count okay? (Yes) Do the zombies zoom or are they the slow, shambling kind? (slow, shambling kind)

So as Matthew J. Drake and I explored Seattle together for the first time (of soon to be many), I let the story prompt simmer at the back of my mind.

We were standing at the top of First, just having visited Fran’s Chocolates and looking out over the stairs just in front of the Four Seasons Hotel leading down to the Seattle Waterfront. (This was when the Alaskan Way Viaduct was still in existence and the original short story featured this landmark as well as the railway beneath.) I turned to Matthew and told him, “I see a story.” He immediately hustled me back down the street to a coffee shop we’d passed called Fonte and ordered a literal flight of french pressed coffees, pulled my laptop out of his backpack (at the time an AlienWare which was no small load to be carrying around randomly) and got me a pastry. I started to write.

The re-release of Remember My Name has a few tweaks to reflect a more updated description of the escape from Post Alley to the waterfront. We’ve also added new surprises: narrated versions of Remember My Name by myself as Lalana Dara and by Matthew J. Drake.

I’ve long admired John Scalzi’s work and enjoyed the way Lock In has multiple narrated versions. This is somewhat inspired by that. Now readers/listeners can enjoy and maybe good-heartedly compare the interpretations of Remember My Name by myself and Matthew J. Drake.
