Golfer Of The Week
For those who do not think that golf is a long walk spoilt, hitting a hole in one is the stuff of dreams and an example of supreme skill or a sheer fluke. Very few do it, but to do it twice in one round, a feat with odds of 67 million to one, according to England Golf, is just showing off.
47-year-old Gavin Bourne, who plays off a 0.4 handicap, was competing in the first round of a 36-hole Club Championship Match Play Final at Droitwich Golf Club in Worcestershire at the end of September. On the 3rd hole, he explained, “I hit it. It was bang on line and as soon as it landed, Tom, my playing partner said, ‘that’s in that is’.” And it was!
Then on the 15th he repeated the feat. “Our club captain, who was refereeing the match.. had actually seen the ball go in…and fair play, he kept his calm till Tom hit his tee shot then all of a sudden he’s just appeared with his arms in the air.
“I’m thinking he’s just trying to find where my ball went so I just pointed forward and said, ‘It’s up there somewhere’, and he’s put his arms in the air again and took a picture of the hole.
“I was like, ‘No way. You’re having a me on here’.”
Needless to say, he won the competition and in the clubhouse, after receiving a botte of whisky, stood a round of drinks, as tradition demands.
