He could be my new boss, Sarah thought. Great, I’m already sucking up.

Still, it was in her nature to be welcoming despite her nerves pulsing at the unknown. If he’s not, it can’t hurt to make him feel welcome. Unless it’s my job he’s after.

“I’m sure you’ll be fine. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t deserving, right?” Sarah could feel everyone’s mood shift and she realized what she said.

“Sorry, bad choice of words given our boss was fired.”

“He was a good boss?” Marcus asked.

“He was,” she said, nodding. “Things change. Hopefully for the better.”
