Stephen Colbert Can’t Hide His Elation at Jimmy Kimmel’s Return: ‘Once More I Am the Only Martyr in Late Night!’ | Video

Stephen Colbert is alone again — and he’s loving it.

The “Late Show” host shared a clip of Monday’s broadcast on Instagram, telling his audience that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is set to return to ABC on Tuesday. This news, also announced Monday, comes after Kimmel was suspended by ABC less than a week prior following comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s death.

“This martyrdom ain’t big enough for the both of us!” Colbert’s Instagram post read.

“This is wonderful news for my dear friend Jimmy and his amazing staff. They get to do their show. You know, I’m so happy for them. Plus, now that Jimmy’s not being cancelled, I get to enjoy this again,” Colbert said, holding up his recently won Emmy to the camera.

In the clip, Colbert jokingly rejoices in his Emmy win — a victory celebration he temporarily delayed in the fallout of Kimmel’s suspension on Wednesday. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” won its first Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series in mid-September after the show was cancelled by CBS earlier this year.

While Colbert’s opening monologues often feature the host cracking jokes about the current political climate, he reveled in the opportunity to start Monday’s show with a bit of celebration.

“We do like 160 of these a year or something, and, you know, when I have the chance, it’s always nice to start the show with some good news,” Colbert said. “Well, just a few hours before we taped this broadcast, we got word that our long, national ‘late nightmare’ is over, because Disney announced that ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will return to air on ABC tomorrow, Tuesday night.”

“Come on! Woo! Woo!” Colbert shouted, peaking his mic’s audio levels.

The comedian ended the segment by daring to hope for a bit of good news for his own show — which was canceled by CBS in July after he accused his parent company of giving “a big, fat bribe” to the Trump administration in hopes of securing a Paramount/Skydance merger. Executives, however, cited financial reasons as the cause for the “Late Show’s” cancellation.

“Once more, I am the only martyr in late night. Wait, unless,” Colbert said before turning to the camera, “CBS, you want to announce anything?”
