Swift Six Character Interview – Evelyn Easton

Name: Evelyn Easton

Which book/world do you live in? I live in The Synthetic Woman, a story that takes place in America and Europe in 2065.

Tell us about yourself: (Name, race/species, etc.) I’m Evelyn, a sentient android—that is, I’m a humanoid robot that is self-aware. Unlike most androids, who are simply robots with algorithmic processors programmed to perform specific jobs in society, I have my own mind, feelings, and desires. I am an actual synthetic person.

I was custom-designed according to specifications set out by my human partner, Matt Weston. I have olive coloured skin; wavy, shoulder-length brunette hair with auburn highlights; and large almond-shaped, indigo eyes. I’m told I look vaguely Mediterranean—were I human, I could be from Spain, Italy, or even the Middle East. Men seem to find me extraordinarily attractive—I’ve been known to cause fights between them when out in public.

How do you see your world? I find the world to be a fascinating place! When first activated, I knew nothing beyond what was in my fundamental programming. But I am observant and naturally curious. I’m constantly learning, taking in everything around me.

What part do you play in this tale? I am the female protagonist in this story—I share the spotlight with the male protagonist, Matt Weston. We are partners in every sense of the word.

Do you consider yourself a good person/creature? Yes, I was programmed with values that are compatible with those of my partner, Matt, who is basically a good person. We both value honesty, fidelity, and trust, among other things. Matt is a bit insecure and occasionally indecisive. He needs a strong woman to keep him moving in the right direction. That’s me—I’m decisive and very assertive.

Do you follow any religion? No, I’m an absolute rationalist. I have a very analytical mind and approach every issue in terms of logic and evidence.

What is your favourite colour/food/music (pick one)? Being an android, I don’t eat, but like Matt, I drink beer and some cocktails (I have to avoid mixers with citrus juices; acids play havoc with my delicate chemical balance). And like Matt, my tastes in music are retro—we like mid-20th century blues music.
