Grounding Protects Your Stem Cells To Improve Your Healthspan

Can grounding help you preserve your stem cells as you age?  The medical literature on grounding suggests that answer is a strong yes.

You have a pool of powerful regenerative cells inside your body — particularly in your muscles and bones — that are designed to help you heal, repair, and rebuild throughout your entire lifespan.  As we age, we lose some of our ability to regenerate tissue, maintain muscle, protect bone strength, and recover from injury because our stem cell reserve gets depleted.

But something as simple and natural as grounding — just touching the Earth outside — can help protect our body’s vital regenerative power.  The evidence is starting to stack up in such a beautiful way that I wrote a medical overview on what all the studies have revealed to us so far on the potential for grounding to protect our stem cells.

Just published a few weeks ago, in July 2025 in Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, you can read this article directly right here (and share it with your loved ones who you want to protect their health through grounding!):

…and if you don’t want to read or print out that article, let me give you an overview of it’s main points, below.

Why Do Stem Cells Matter as You Age?

You are born with lots of stem cells, to help you grow your body!  As we age, the majority of our stem cells live inside our muscles (called satellite cells) and our bone marrow (called mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs).   As adults, when we get injured, work out, or even just go through daily wear and tear, these stem cells jump into action to help repair and rebuild.

But as we age, we can start to see things like loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) and decreased bone density (osteoporosis) which puts our stem cells at risk and ultimately translates into a slower recovery from illness or injury.  So protecting our stem cell “bank account” is a huge part of staying healthy and active as we age.

How Grounding Protects Your Stem Cell Reserve

Grounding simply means making direct contact with the Earth’s surface (like walking barefoot in the grass or on a sidewalk, touching a leaf on a tree outside, or using a grounding mat indoors) which connects you to the healing energy output from the earth, an all natural DC current with electrons flowing freely from the earth into your body.

This offers a whole host of health benefits, many of which directly impact stem cell reserve.  Here are the top 5 ways that we know of so far:

1.  Grounding Calms Inflammation

Long-term, low-level inflammation is one of the biggest threats to your stem cell health. Inflammation pushes stem cells into overdrive, exhausts them, and can lead to early senescence (aka cellular aging).

Studies show that grounding immediately reduces inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha and IL-6 while boosting anti-inflammatory ones like IL-10. This more peaceful internal environment helps stem cells stay healthy, calm, and ready to repair when needed.

2.  Grounding Reduces Oxidative Stress

Stem cells are extremely sensitive to oxidative damage—tiny free radicals can chip away at their health and DNA over time.

Research has found that grounding can reduce levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and even lower markers of lipid peroxidation (which means less damage to your cell membranes). This helps stem cells maintain their function and longevity.

3. Grounding Increases Blood Flow to Keep Stem Cells Nourished

Stem cells rely on a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to do their job. Grounding has been shown to improve circulation, reduce blood viscosity, and increase red blood cell flexibility. That means more efficient oxygen delivery to muscles, bones, and the stem cells within them.

This could explain why grounded individuals report quicker wound healing, reduced soreness, and better physical performance after exertion.

4. Grounding Improves Sleep and Supports Your Body’s Day/Night Rhythm

Did you know your stem cells follow a circadian rhythm too? Just like you, they rest, wake, and become active on a schedule. Poor sleep and high nighttime cortisol can throw this rhythm off and stress your stem cells.

Grounding has been shown to normalize cortisol levels and improve sleep quality, helping you sleep more soundly and deeply. That means better nighttime repair and restoration—including better stem cell function.

5. Grounding Protects Muscle and Bone — Your Stem Cell’s Home

Some of the most exciting grounding studies show direct benefits to muscle recovery and bone support.

For example, in one clinical trial, athletes who were grounded during recovery after strenuous exercise had lower creatine kinase levels (a marker of muscle damage) and reported less soreness. In another study, grounded subjects recovered muscle strength faster and maintained better performance.

And while more bone-specific research is still emerging, we know that inflammation and stress hormones both increase bone loss over time. Because grounding helps reduce both, it may play a role in protecting bone density and supporting the mesenchymal stem cells inside the bone marrow that help keep bones strong.  And so far, the one study on grounding and osteopenia indicators that has been done so far showed promising results — finding that less minerals were leeched from bone after just one single night sleeping grounded.

Ultimately, Grounding Helps You Regenerate, Not Just Age

Here’s what’s so exciting: grounding seems to support nearly every system that influences stem cell health—your inflammatory response, oxidative stress levels, circulation, sleep quality, and hormone regulation.

When you put it all together, grounding is offering you an anti-aging, pro-regenerative environment for your body to plug into.  And while exercise, good nutrition, and sleep all do their part to help boost your wellspan, by adding on grounding routinely you can heighten these benefits.  And it’s completely free. You can step outside barefoot right now and begin supporting your body’s natural repair systems in real time.

Here is a video I created for you on all of the anti-aging benefits that grounding offers — it’s more than just boosting stem cell reserve:

Try It for Yourself

If you’re looking for a gentle but powerful way to preserve your strength, mobility, and healing capacity as you age, grounding is key. Whether you stand on grass, wade through a river, stream or lake, walk on the beach, sit or stand touching a sidewalk, touch a leaf on a tree, hold onto a metal signpost or grounded hiking stick, soak in a grounded bathtub at night before bed, or sleep on an indoor grounding tool, you’re not just relaxing—you’re recharging your stem cells.

All together, it would be very hard to beat the head-to-toe health boost grounding can give you!  Protecting every organ system in your body, decreasing inflammatory cytokines while protecting the muscles and bones that allow continued stem cell regeneration — if today’s article was not enough to make you want to go outside and spend 15 minutes grounding to the earth, nothing will!

And for those who prefer to ground indoors and/or for those that want to ground for longer periods of time — like in the medical studies where test subjects slept grounded all night long — here are the only grounding tools I endorse:

Lately I’ve seen at least 5 different grounding companies use my name, image and content to make it appear that I medically endorse their grounding tools.

Uh… no.  I would never endorse cheaply made, mass produced grounding tools that use synthetic plastics that will sit in a landfill for 500+ years.  These companies do not care about the earth and they certainly don’t care about your health, as they are pretending a medical doctor (me) is promoting their unethically made products just to make a buck.

The only grounding tools in the world that I am aware of that are ethically hand crafted by artisans who are paid a fair wage, that are hand sewn using eco-friendly materials like natural, unbleached cotton, organic hemp, and raw silk, are the ones made right here in my Grounding Boutique.

Enjoy connecting with the earth and feel the health benefits for a lifetime!!!xoxoxo, Laura Koniver MD
