Zombies, Werewolves and Vampires
Zombies are one of those topics that "it is what it is" you can change a little bit here and there but Zombie stories all tend to be the same because their isn't much you can do with them. If there is a Zombie there isn't much one can do that someone else has not in a story about them. No matter how many times they are written about you can't escape the cliche of repetitiveness nature that are Zombies. Flesh Eating, body parts falling, slowly walking this is how we know them and while today's zombie has picked up an extra step or two there's still that lust for flesh and walking around completely baffled and incoherent.
Now maybe if someone wrote about a genetically mutated Zombie with feelings and awareness who fights for the good instead of evil and flesh then maybe then the concept of one would change but I think Zombies are exactly how we have made them..stiff as a bored and just like their urge for flesh and brains is a readers urge to read about them
When I hear the word Werewolf I think of what we know one to be, a hairy creature with the look of evil with piercing fangs and agility and the intention to kill. Sometimes still a man with wolf features while other times all full beast but the result and intentions always the same mind set of a werewolf. When I think of infamous or rather Notorious werewolves I like to think of Michael Jackson in Thriller over Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf for obvious reasons lol. Nowadays with the werewolf culture growing just like vampires they tend to mix them in with vampires for the classic one on one showdown. Comparing them to Zombies and Vampires I think there is a bit more you can do with Werewolves and Vampires compared to Zombies, you can write of werewolves on their own or put them with vampires but in a more horror sense not like the Twilight series.
When I hear the word Vampire the first thing that comes to mind is Dracula, the king of all Vampires. I then think of Bram Stoker and Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration behind Dracula. I then think of Bela Lugosi playing Dracula and then finally think of Anne Rice's Vampire Series. Again Twilight aside( I don't find this to be a serious take on Vampires) Vampires are those creatures where we have actually seen their evolution from hungry lusting creatures to passionate immortals who long to fill the gaping void of loneliness. There are different kinds of Vampires but only one kind of Zombie. So when I hear Vampire I think mostly of an immortal being who may not exactly have that first instinct to kill but rather look for companionship.

In Balkan folklore, vampires are usually people who were evil in mortality, and made a pact with the devil immediately after death, in which the devil snookered them with a promise of immortality in return for their souls, and then granted them a sort of half-life, half-death, where they are dependent on living creatures to sustain themselves. Balkan folklore depicts repentant vampires, but they are usually repentant only after they have had their power source seized from them and been bested in physical combat...yes, Balkan folklore is replete with accounts of people wrestling with vampires.
When you look at the origins of the vampire myth in Balkan folklore, it becomes apparent how much the pop culture vampires have strayed from the original creature, and from the beliefs and traditions that are still alive today.
