🚨 Sneak Peek (Sequel to Rogue) 🚨

🚨 Sneak Peek (Sequel to Rogue) 🚨

I’ve got a brand-new scene from Book 2 (the follow-up to RogueRogue) and I need your input:

************************************
I’d worked hard to keep the beast locked away. He was the past, a part of a man who was dead and buried. I couldn’t let him out now, not again. You can drag the beast out of the jungle, cage it, make it do tricks, but its soul would always stalk the jungle.

I couldn’t set him loose around Jane…

“So what’s next?” she asked, twisting back to face me after all the green landscape out the passenger window had been swallowed up by inky night. “You know, with that guy, Fungabera?”

Well at least she wasn’t asking about Overcoat. What’s a discrete way of saying I needed to garrotte a bastard before he slit my belly open and pulled out my intestines?

Still, maybe I got lucky and she hadn’t noticed our mutual enmity, or just dismissed it as normal game tension. Things could get heated at the tables, and as I hadn’t ;ea[t over a table and knocked out his teeth with chips, she probably hadn’t thought anything of it. Probably.

I glanced up to the rear view, still black.

“Well now it gets all very civilised. I go there tomorrow. We’ll talk. He will probably try and bargain with that big bastard trying to intimidate me. I might have to apply some pressure to make him see sense, but in the end he’ll pay, they always do.”

“What sort of pressure?” That bloody edge was back again and I didn’t need to look to know she was giving me the look.

“I never hit anyone who didn’t try and hit me first, Jane.” Ok, that’s a lie, or maybe half a lie. They were always planning to give me a whack across the head, I just beat them to it. “People like him always have the money to pay their debts, they just don’t like to part with it. But you give someone a choice, and make them believe it. Really believe it. That they can either pay their debts or lose a hand. They’ll make the sane choice.”

She sighed. A heavy sound, full of regret, and something I wasn’t sure about but that made my guys knot. “And you call that civilised?”

“What would you prefer? A horse’s head in their bed?”

Jane rolled her eyes. “Funny.”

“Whose joking.” And for once I’m deadly serious. “Civilised is one word for it. I might break a few bones every now and then when some wise guy thinks he can avoid what’s owed by kicking my head in, but this is a rough game, Jane. Not everyone plays nice. I’ve met plenty who think killing someone who owes is a good way of making sure the next guy doesn’t fuck about. It’s just business. When you owe, you pay. On time. In full. No short counts, you get no second chance.”

Jane listened in silence, yet with every word she seemed to shrink into herself.

Perhaps I’d been too hard on her. How could she of known. We were from different worlds, she lived in mine’s sugar coated topping.

“Why…” she asked, slowly, her voice suddenly very small. “Why do you do it?”
