Spooky Things to in New Orleans While on Vacation

If you’re looking for things to do in New Orleans on vacation, the number of activities available can be overwhelming! I recently visited and am sharing the spooky things to do in New Orleans that we found fun and would recommend, from ghost tours to visiting a vampire speakeasy. There are a lot more things we didn’t get to, which is a great excuse for another trip!

Take a Ghost Tour

Some kind of ghost tour is a must when visiting New Orleans! It’s a great way to see interesting historical landmarks and learn their spooky history.

We did two ghost tours in New Orleans, and the one I’d most recommend is the New Orleans Spirits and Spells: Witchcraft, Voodoo, and Ghost Tour that begins at Hex: Old World Witchery. Arrive early so you have time to browse around Hex and look at all the witchy things.

I felt that this tour was the most informative. And although the tour description promises you’ll end the tour by casting a spell for good luck, don’t expect that part. Our guide was not a witch, but she did give us all good luck crystals that were charged on the witch coven’s altar.

You’ll visit a lot of the top spooky destinations, like the LaLaurie Mansion, Interview with a Vampire filming locations, and several haunted locations.

This one is for fans of American Horror Story: Coven and can be combined with a visit to the beautiful Garden District.

The Coven House was featured prominently in Season 3 and served as Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. Those exceptional young ladies just happen to be witches!

The real house known as the Buckner Mansion, location at 1410 Jackson Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130. It is a private residence, so you can only see it from the outside.

Potions is a unique vampire-themed speakeasy that offers an immersive nightlife experience with a gothic twist. Nestled behind a secret entrance, this atmospheric bar transports guests into a world of dark elegance, complete with dim lighting, lavish decor, and an otherworldly vibe.

The drink menu features creatively crafted cocktails with names and ingredients inspired by vampire lore, perfect for those seeking a taste of the mysterious.

Potions is a cool spot right off Bourbon St., but you can’t just walk in off the street! You have to get the secret pass the get in by visiting the vampire boutique. Click here to read how to get into the vampire speakeasy.

There are many interesting cemeteries you can visit in New Orleans, but only one has the real Marie Laveau! St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 has that honor, but they will tell you other cemeteries have what they call a “faux Laveau.” LOL

You can only go into this cemetery with a private tour, which you can conveniently book right across the street at the visitor center. Click here to read all the details about the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 tour.

The Museum of Death New Orleans doesn’t allow any photos inside, so I only have a pic of the outside. The museum is small, and a bit pricey at $20, but it’s creepy and interesting.

The museum offers a self-guided, graphic look into death-related artifacts like serial killer art, mortician tools, crime scene photos, and funeral memorabilia.

It’s not the kind of place you want to take kids, and you kind of feel like you need a shower afterwards, or maybe a good smudging.

New Orleans is filled with history, ghost stories and vampire lore. These are just a few that I got to try on our last visit. I hope to add more to my spooky things to do in New Orleans list on my next visit!
