Adventures in Newport, R.I.

A family wedding brought us a couple weeks ago to Rhode Island—a state I had hardly ever visited even though I grew up in Chelsea, Massachusetts, right across the Mystic River from Boston. The day after the wedding, my husband and I escaped the sweltering heat to visit that historic playground of the moneyed classes, Newport. There, we accomplished the mission we always set out for ourselves whenever we visit family back east:
