Too Hot To Go Outside? 5 Easy Ways To Get Grounded While Staying Cool

When the summer heat hits its peak and you find yourself wilting just stepping out the front door, it’s time to bring your grounding practice indoors—where the air conditioning is cool, the water is refreshing, and your healing connection to the Earth doesn’t have to skip a beat.

Although we typically think about grounding indoors in the winter when it’s too cold to go barefoot outside, you can use the same principles to get grounded indoors to escape the summer heat too.  Here are a bunch of great options to pick from:

5 Ways To Ground Comfortably In Summer Heat:

1. Water = Free Indoor Grounding

All water that connects your body to a grounded source can help you connect to the Earth’s healing energy—even from inside your home.  That’s because all water operating systems, including water tanks, water pumps, water heaters, and even tankless water systems are required to be grounded by law.  So even if your pipes are plastic… the stream of water itself is fully grounded and will ground you every second that you are washing your hands, drinking from the faucet, washing dishes, taking a bath, or even swimming in indoor swimming pools.  Here is an old video I made for you where I show you with my grounding test meter that all streams of water are grounded.

To easily ground indoors any time, do any of these things:

Washing dishes becomes an act of self-care (really!) when your hands are under that stream of water.  Have you ever noticed this?  You dread doing the dishes but find yourself oddly calmer and more centered afterwards, almost like you were meditating?  That’s because you were grounded and your brain got a break from stress, instantly.

Taking a bath is one of the most luxurious ways to get grounded in the summer—relaxing, restorative, and an instant relief to your tight muscles.  Light a candle, take a book into the bath, listen to music, and soak away all your cares, knowing you are grounded the entire time.

Swimming in an indoor pool grounds you the entire time.  Every bit as grounding as if you were swimming in the ocean, the filtration system on all pools grounds the entire body of water just like it was outside on the earth itself.  One of my favorite trips for resetting your circadian rhythm while traveling is to go to your hotel swimming pool as soon as possible after check-in — even if it is a rooftop swimming pool, you will get a natural whole body reset.  This is as true in the summer when you are seeking the relief of water as it is in the winter when you are wanting to swim indoors in a heated pool or hot tub.  Another great reason to join your local YMCA — swimming grounded and even doing water aerobics whenever you want a quick grounding session, year round!

Try it: take that evening soak. Enjoy washing your hands under cool fresh water. Swim that extra lap on vacation. You’re not just cooling off—you’re supporting your nervous system, lowering inflammation, and giving your cells the electrical input they crave.

2. Ground Through Plants — In Your Living Room?

Did you know that your indoor plants can become little grounding portals?  Not only is it better for the plant to be grounded to the earth (watch The Grounded and Heal For Free films to see tons of evidence of the benefits of grounding to plants!) but it also give you an indoor way to get grounded.  You can watch a TikTok on this I made for you here, where I show you how I touch a leaf on this plant every time I go up or down my steps, for an instant grounding boost.

You can do it too.  Simply pushing a plant grounding stake into the potting soil and connecting it to a grounded outlet and poof! that plant becomes a beautiful, leafy, easy way to ground indoors through a plant.  Every time you touch a leaf, you’re connecting to the Earth’s healing energy.

Try it: set your favorite potted plant somewhere central —your kitchen counter, by your bed, near your desk, by your front door or steps—and make it a habit to give it a little love (and receive a fabulous grounding boost) throughout your day:

3. Concrete = Instant Grounding Retreat

Here’s a lesser-known secret: any cement slab resting directly on the Earth is grounded…whether it’s inside or outside.  So while you might already know that sidewalks will ground you outside, did you know the same is true for cement and concrete poured on the earth even inside your home?

It’s true, your entire home foundation is grounded if it is a slab foundation. So check your home! Do you have a cement basement floor? A cement floor in your utility room? A cement garage slab? If so, lucky you!  You have a built in, sheltered grounding spot in your home. These spaces are gold mines for indoor grounding.

I’ve had patients realize if they just stand barefoot on the cement floor in their laundry room while they fold laundry, they get an easy grounding session in several times a week.  In my own garage, I’ve set up a comfy chair and some fans — I read books and medical journals, work on my computer, stretch, meditate, and do yoga there all summer long with feet or fingertips resting on the cement floor so that I’m grounded the entire time.

It’s so worth finding areas that have unpainted cement that you can ground through in your living spaces, because it doesn’t just help keep you cool in the summer… come winter, that same space transforms into a cozy grounding nook with the addition of warm blankets and a small space heater. Year-round grounding success!

4. Grounding Tools That Keep You Cool

If you’re not using indoor grounding tools yet, summer is the perfect time to start. Here are a few cooling ideas:

Grounding mats under your feet while you work or sit.

Grounding mattress toppers so your body heals while you sleep.

Grounding water bottles that you can fill with cool ice water in the summer, and cozy hot water in the winter, for comfortable year round temperature regulation in just one product.

Grounding ice packs that reduce inflammation and help you stay cool.

This is such a sweet spot—staying cool and getting grounded at the same time. Yes please!  And just like the water, plant and concrete options above, the solution you find to grounding indoors where you are comfortable works perfectly to provide a comfortable safe space to get grounded even in the dead of winter, when the world turns icy cold.  So it’s worth finding an indoor grounding solution that you can use year round, no matter what season you are in.

Looking for eco-friendly, handcrafted grounding tools?  Than you know how hard it is to find something that is not mass manufactured using the cheapest synthetic materials… from plastic, polyester and vinyl “leatherette”, these all sit in a landfill for centuries (while also introducing microplastics into your body — yuck and yuck.)

So I started making my own, using organic and eco-friendly materials, hand crafted locally here in the USA, so that you know it’s healthy for you and healthy for the planet.  Finally grounding can be win-win.  My boutique offers organic grounding mats, organic grounding sheet/topper sets, organic grounding mats, and more — custom hand made right here in the USA.  Explore the Grounding Boutique »

5. Still Want to Ground Outdoors?

Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean outdoor grounding is off the table. Here are a few creative ways to beat the heat and stay connected to the Earth:

Take a frozen juice bar or ice pop outside—stay grounded as long as it takes to finish it and that will give you at least a 10 minute grounding boost to your health while keeping your focus on cooling down.

Lay in the shade with a fan or mister and a good book.

Rest cold packs over your eyes, on your forehead, across the back of your neck, or on your chest while you rest outside to get in some extra grounding time without raising your core body temperature

Turn on a sprinkler in your yard to get grounded while splashing through it, and don’t forget to invite you kids to do it with you!  Or walk through a river, wade in a lake, or splash in the ocean — any natural body of water will cool you down and ground you all at the same time.

Always drink a big glass of water with added mineral drops in it before and after every grounding session, to boost your hydration from the inside out.  Here is an article where I talk more about the importance of staying well hydrated in the summer:  Do You Have Any Of These 10 Symptoms Of Silent Dehydration Right Now? You Don’t Have to Choose Between Cool Comfort and Healing

The beauty of grounding is that it’s so flexible—it meets you wherever you are. Indoors or out, winter or summer, no matter the season or where on earth you are… your body always benefits.

So this summer, when the heat feels like too much, bring your grounding practice in. Get creative. Touch that plant, fill that tub, stretch on that cement floor, plug in your grounding mat.

You’re still grounding. You’re still healing. And you’re doing it in cool, comfortable style.
