I’M BACK!
It was amazing. I rode my bike for 8 hours per day for an entire week. I laughed, I nearly cried, I ate way too many Fig Newtons and drank way too much Gatorade. I took many pictures and met many new friends. I took a weeks worth of shits in porta-johns. (Which I learned to love. No flushing means less waiting). I saw a monster truck full of kids wearing masks waving confederate flags out the window. I took offense to this for multiple reasons, but mostly as a straight man, I’m offended that they assumed everyone that participates in the AIDS ride is gay. Not to mention, where I come from it’s legal to carry concealed weapons and I can kick your fucking ass so get out of the truck and take off your masks you pussies.
It was an enormous commitment and it cost me quite a bit of money including an unpaid week off of work, but it was worth every minute. I will most definitely be doing this ride again, although I’m not so sure it’ll be next year.
After a week and a half on the road, peddling my bicycle down the coast of California trying to change the world one mile at a time, I’m happy to be back in good old New York City resting my aching body.
There’s no place like home!
