Trekking The Manaslu Circuit: How Difficult Is It Really?

By Aleena Hocain

The Manaslu Circuit is not like most hikes, its filled with adventure, taking you around Nepals eighth-highest mountain.Although it lacks the fame of Annapurna and Everest, this trekking gives you a real taste of the Himalayas, beauty, and satisfaction.

If you dream of exploring remote routes but still doubt if they are for you, then, its important to unpack what makes this circuit both challenging and incredibly doable with the right mindset.

Some people say the Manaslu Circuit Trek is moderate to strenuous, but dont let that opinion stop you. If you get ready and have some motivation, it could be the best journey youve ever had.

Trail Conditions And Terrain

First thing first: The trail you will actually walk on!

The trail winds through lush forests, suspension bridges, river valleys, alpine meadows, and rugged mountain passes. Its amazing!

Be prepared for uneven paths that include steps, tight paths by cliffs, dusty surfaces, and patches of ice at the high points.

Although most of the hike is kept in good condition, a few sections seem wild and untouched, which makes it even more exciting.

You wont just be walking; youll have the chance to enjoy simple landscapes that look unaffected by modern developments.

Moreover, you will get used to bumpy paths and changing trail conditions that require you to be aware of your steps.

Daily Trekking Hours

What will be your daily achievement?

On average, trekkers walk between 6 to 8 hours a day, with some days stretching longer, especially as you approach the more dramatic elevations.

It has its own regular pace. So, start the hike early, stop for a lunch break and a tea break, and finish in the afternoon.

Keep in mind, Its not a race. It is best to walk slowly at the beginning; youll notice the landscapes more, and you will also acclimatize better.

The majority of itineraries are arranged so you can rest and adjust well rather than requiring you to push every day.

High Altitude Impact

Now, its the time to address the elephant in the room, altitude.

Since the Larke Pass is 5,160 meters (16,929 ft) high, symptoms of altitude sickness may appear for trekkers.

But heres the thing: you take it easy, drink water, and keep to the advised schedule, your body will probably get used to it. Usually, spending a few days in Samagaun or Samdo makes it easy for you to take care of your needs and get comfortable.

Everyone reacts differently to elevation, so its crucial to listen to your body. Headaches and dizziness can often be treated by resting and staying hydrated; however, having a private guide is smart as they can notice and respond to anything unusual.

The Larke Pass Challenge

Lets talk about the most exciting moment, Larke Pass.

Crossing Larke Pass is the high point both literally and emotionally of the trek. It is also more physically intense than the other areas. It takes some time to climb the pass, which is also very chilly. In order to avoid the strong wind later, you will begin trekking before the sun rises.

The air is thin, and the climb is steady but not steep. Its the altitude and duration that make it tough to expect an 810 hours day.

But the reward? Seeing strange, tall peaks and feeling euphoric about something impressive you did.

It will take you out of your comfort zone and give you a better appreciation and trust in yourself in return.

Weather And Seasons

Weather is everything on the Manaslu trail.

The ideal time to go trekking is March to May and from late September to November. There are clear skies, great visibility, and few weather changes during these seasons.

Monsoon season brings heavy rains, slippery trails, and landslides definitely not ideal.

Winter (December to February) offers stunning views but comes with freezing temperatures and potential pass closures due to snow.

Setting out for treks in prime seasons reduces the risks and improves your happiness on the journey. So, be cautious of the time frame while planning.
