Things I Yelled into the Void (aka Threads) That Might Help You Write Today

Every now and then, I find myself unintentionally turning into that slightly eccentric writer-friend who can’t help but share advice while sipping coffee and avoiding the next chapter. Today was one of those days.
It started with one post. Then another. And then—well, let’s just say Threads got a mini-author PSA series from yours truly. So, I thought I’d gather those scattered thoughts into one slightly rambly, slightly snarky, but 100% heartfelt blog post.
Dear Fellow Author,
Write the stories you want to read. Fearlessly. Without limits. Without flinching every time someone whispers "AI."
If we stop writing certain tropes, avoid specific words, or tiptoe away from inspiration sources we once loved because someone might think we're using AI to write our books—it’s not AI killing words. It’s not misinformed readers killing words. It’s us.
You are allowed to love your process. You are allowed to be inspired. You are allowed to write that weird little story your heart can’t stop thinking about, even if no algorithm understands why.
Signed,
An author who’s written books every “expert” said not to… and then sold them to traditional publishers anyway.
Dear Fellow Author,
Please. I beg you. Don’t sign people up to your newsletter just because you’ve got their email address. I know it’s tempting. I know your newsletter is delightful. But forced subscriptions are how you end up blocked, reported, and cursed in lowercase by other writers trying to clean their inboxes.
And for the love of genre fiction (and to stay on the right side of privacy laws), include an unsubscribe link. It's not just best practice—it’s kindness in hyperlink form.
Signed,
Someone who didn’t sign up for your newsletter and now never will.
Dear Fellow Author,
Always check your sources. Seriously. Publishing is full of confident advice givers who—bless their hearts—don’t always know what they’re talking about.
Trad or indie, the best first place to check in is with you. Does this advice feel right? Does it serve your goals, your peace, your writing style? If the answer is no, even if it sounds wildly reasonable or came with a PowerPoint—walk away.
You know more than you think. Trust your instincts. (Just maybe not your first drafts.)
Signed,
An author who has absolutely taken advice she shouldn’t have… but now triple-checks everything and drinks tea about it.
Writing advice is everywhere—some of it amazing, some of it like expired milk in a fancy bottle. Pick what feeds your creativity. Leave what doesn't. And keep writing the books only you can write.
Because we need them. 🖊️💕
