On the edge of the Azraq oasis in the modern town of Al-Azraq is Qasr Al-Azraq, one of the main Desert Castles frequented by tourists in Jordan. The castle is a small fort built with distinctive black basalt blocks; the basalt being abundant across this region, known as the Black Desert. With its strategic location next to a major water source, the Romans built a small fort here in the second century AD/CE.
