Daily life is full of routines. We get up, we eat, we go places, we talk to people. How much of those routines should be detailed in writing can make or break a character. In some scenes, you might find that certain routine actions are critical to advance the story and to give depth to your characters. However, unless there’s a particular quirky idiom nestled within a character’s daily routine that you want to use to charm your reader or make your reader dislike the character, detailing everything out should be avoided. After all, who wants to know every single time their favorite character uses the bathroom?
